In The Day I Stopped Loving You, Emily, the Winters family’s adopted daughter, spends seven years trying to get closer to Blake. She practices piano until her fingers hurt and tries to build a life with him, setting three rules for their relationship. Her adoptive mother donated bone marrow to save her, and Emily feels she owes the family everything. Even when Blake returns to his ex, Sophia, Emily holds his jacket while he embraces her.

Then Blake forces her to eat mangoes despite her allergy, blames her for a kidnapping, and injures her wrist, destroying her piano dreams. Emily finally stops making excuses for him. She no longer checks his schedule, interferes in his affairs, or waits for him to care. By the time she leaves, she has nothing left to give him.

When Blake learns the truth, he begs Emily to come back. She calmly reminds him of the mango, the knife, the shard, and the road. After everything he has put her through, she wants him to let her go. Emily eventually opens a flower shop with one rule for herself: never lose herself again.
