Eleanor Sterling is the true controller of the Sterling Family Trust. Her husband, Alexander Vance, teams up with her best friend Sophia Bennett to fake amnesia, tricking her into signing divorce papers in a bid to seize her entire fortune. Having seen through their scheme long before, Eleanor completes the legal divestment of all high‑value assets prior to the divorce, leaving Vance Group as an empty shell saddled with $1.1 billion in environmental liabilities.
On the very day after the divorce when Alexander and Sophia take over the company, the EPA issues an indefinite shutdown order together with massive fines. The pair fall from grace overnight. Alexander tries to sell off assets to pay the debts, only to find all his real‑estate holdings frozen. Sophia steals his remaining cash and flees to Harrison Sweet, a ruthless Wall Street tycoon, only to be cast aside by him. Consumed by despair, the two turn on each other.
