Abducted at age one, CEO Victoria Sterling's daughter Sophie suffers years of abuse by Agnes Barton's family. One day, a starving Sophie is forced by Rachel Barton to pick mushrooms. Saved from a fall by Eleanor Abbott, Sophie spots poisonous mushrooms in her basket and tosses them. However, Agnes secretly retrieves them and mixes them into a chicken stew, forbidding Sophie from eating. Sophie tries to warn them but is beaten. The stew causes Rachel to miscarry, and Agnes frames Sophie. Escaping to Eleanor's home, Sophie is warmly taken in despite the family's own struggles with Leo's leukemia. Eventually, Victoria Sterling finds Sophie and repays Eleanor's kindness by curing Leo and giving her a job.
